Missions

Missions are focused stories: a task, a danger, a reward. They are the most reliable way to earn Renown and Marks, and good missions make good stories.

Tiers

  • Errand: no real danger. Escorting a letter, guarding a harvest fair, finding a lost hound. 1 Renown, 4 posts each.
  • Task: a risk of trouble. Bandits on the road, a smuggler to question. 2 Renown, 8 posts each.
  • Venture: expect a fight. Clearing a naga nest, stealing a ledger from a rival court. 4 Renown, 15 posts each.
  • Peril: serious danger, enemy fae and real stakes. Raiding a Hybern spy-house. 6 Renown, 21 posts each. May turn DE if the plot demands it.
  • Nightmare: combat is certain and death is likely. Hunting a Dread outlaw, entering Under the Mountain. 10 Renown, 28 posts each. Always DE.

Post counts are per person. Marks come from grading as for any thread (see Renown, Bounty & Marks).

Who may take what

  • Tier 1 (Sworn, Wanderer): Errand, Task.
  • Tier 2 (Courtier, C and B-Class): up to Venture.
  • Tier 3 (Emissary, A-Class): all. Nightmare needs a companion.
  • Shadows, Tier 4 and 5: all, alone if they wish.

A lower-tier character may join a higher mission led by someone who could take it alone, and is DE like everyone else.

Who may run them

  • Any Courtier or higher may run Errand and Task missions for other players.
  • @Storytellers run Venture, Peril and Nightmare missions.
  • A High Lord or Lady may issue court missions up to Venture to their own court, without a Storyteller.
  • The game master voices NPCs and the world, never another player's character.
  • A game master's own posts are graded like any group thread.

How it works

  1. The game master fills the template pinned in #mission-board and sends it for a staff check: Storytellers in #story-workshop, everyone else in a Mission Review ticket (#submit-a-ticket).
  2. Staff post the approved mission in #mission-board, tagged with its tier and Open.
  3. Players reply inside the mission to join. The game master updates the roster and tags it Full.
  4. The mission is played as a post in a location forum, or in #rp-bubbles, tagged Mission.
  5. When it ends, the game master tags it Done and posts it in #thread-inbox.

Honest difficulty

A mission must be as hard as its tier. If staff find a Peril that was really a Task, they grade it as a Task.

Court missions

Sworn characters can ask for work in their court's hall. Rulers, regents and the Inner Circle hand out court missions there, and the court remembers who answered.
